Why Be Trans Fat Free?

There is a direct, proven link between diets high in trans fat and the risk of disease.

Trans fats do two things that raise the risk of developing heart disease:

•They raise the blood levels of the bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower the blood levels of the good cholesterol (HDL). LDL cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease and HDL cholesterol protects against heart disease.
• Trans fats make the arteries more rigid, and can cause major clogging of the arteries.

As well, trans fats can cause insulin resistance and can contribute to type 2 diabetes.

What are Trans Fats?

Trans fatty acids, or trans fats, are created when a substance such as liquid vegetable oil undergoes hydrogenation. Hydrogenation is a process where hydrogen is mixed into oil, which then makes it into solid fat (i.e, shortening).

Where are Trans Fats found?

Trans fats are found in many different foods including cookies, crackers, fries or any foods made with or fried in partially hydrogenated oils. They are also present at low levels in dairy products, beef and lamb. Some refined oils may contain small amounts of trans fatty acids. Any label that states made with partially hydrogenated oil or shortening contains trans fats.
